Reykjavik Chips

I was recently in Iceland and while planning our trip, I wanted to check out some of the nicest places to eat while in the country. This was a place that came highly recommended and I was particularly keen to try after I checked the menu and their garlic sauce was called Buffy, especially when I was traveling with someone who was a big fan of the TV show. I'm just a fan of chips in general so anywhere that sold them was somewhere I was happy to try out.

We didn't have too much bother finding the place and the first time we walked past, it was by accident that we found it. Located just off Laugavegur Street, the main shopping street in Reykjavik, the forest green fronted cafe with it's bright mural is easy to spot, although the streets are quite colourful in general around that part of Reykjavik.

The place itself was fairly small but very quaint and the green from the outside continues on the inside as well. There are lots of sacks of potatoes around the place and also lots of pictures on the walls of films such as Mr Chips and even a framed photograph of Stephen Fry which did make me laugh.

There is a real chilled out vibe about this place, it's small and quaint but a nice place to relax and eat your chips. There is a small counter where you order your chips and they let you know how long it will take for your chips. We sat at a banquette against the front window and were able to look around us at the art and also keep an eye on the street outside as well while we waited for our chips.

This restaurant has probably the smallest menu I've ever saw when going for something to eat. The menu consist of chips served with a variety of sauces and that's about it.

You can probably have plain chips as well but with such a wide selection of sauces, there is something for almost everyone on this menu – the menu is just missing some cheese as an option to have with your chips. Chips, cheese and garlic mayo is a winning combination in my world.

It doesn't take long to order since there is literally only chips and dips on the menu, although with the choice of dips available, it can be tough, and I almost ordered two dips since I found it hard to make up my mind whether I wanted the Buffy or the Vegan Satay. I opted for the Buffy in the end though but if I ever found myself back in Reykjavik, I'd try the satay.

I opted to have a separate tub of dip whereas my friend chose to have the sauce over her chips. I don't think it really mattered though which you chose as the chips were gorgeous and I had a generous portion of the Buffy sauce as well. The chips themselves were worth all the positive reviews that I had read, piping hot, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. They didn't taste at all greasy either, unlike some other chips that I have had from takeaways. Portion was about right, as many more and I would have continued to eat until I was sick as they were nice, and I resisted the temptation to order more!

There was something especially nice about the combination of coming in from the cold and having piping hot chips with a gorgeous garlic dip that really set us up for further exploring around Reykjavik.

Prices are very expensive for almost everything in Iceland and at 950 krona (just over £7) for our chips, dip and a can of whatever drink we wanted I thought this was reasonable enough for Iceland.

It's a little too far to go to Reykjavik for chips but if I ever found myself in Iceland again, I would definitely go back here. The chips were lovely, portion sizes were decent and I liked how you had a choice of whether you wanted your sauce poured on your chips or separately.

Yes, it's more expensive than what I normally pay for a portion of chips but since I was on holiday anyway (I tend to spend more when I'm not at home) and also because of the novelty of the place, I think that £7 for lunch and a drink is reasonable. Okay, it's not somewhere you'd go all the time due to lack of variety but the chips were delicious and I would recommend this to anyone in Reykjavik.

The cafe has a relaxed, chilled out vibe and was a nice place to relax and eat our chips and the warm chips were a welcome addition to our lunchtime walk in the cold around Reykjavik.
